How much should you tip?

Tipping etiquette can be confusing, and it varies by country, service, and situation. This calculator handles the math for you — just enter the bill, pick a tip percentage, and split it across any number of people.

U.S. tipping guide

• Restaurants (sit-down): 15–20% (18% is a safe default)
• Exceptional service: 22–25%
• Bars: $1–2 per drink, or 15–20% of the tab
• Food delivery: 15–20% or $5 minimum
• Taxis/rideshare: 10–15%
• Hairstylists: 15–20%
• Hotel housekeeping: $2–5 per night
• Counter service / fast food: no tip expected

When you should NOT tip

• Fast food and counter-service restaurants
• Professionals like doctors, lawyers, or government employees
• Business owners (they set their own prices)

Tipping outside the U.S.

Tipping customs differ dramatically worldwide. In Japan, tipping can be considered rude. In much of Europe, a service charge is already included on the bill (look for "service compris" or "servizio incluso"), and rounding up is appreciated. Always check local customs when traveling.
